Puffins Class

Welcome to Puffins Class - Miss Finch

Welcome to Puffins Class!

Our class can be found in the main school building and is where years 3, 4, 5 and 6 work together at being fantastic. We work really hard and always try to be kind in everything we do.

There are 25 of us in our class and along with Miss Finch (our class teacher), Miss Williams and Miss Trembath (our TAs) we have a brilliant time. We are also joined by Josh on a Friday who takes us for Capoeira which we LOVE and John on a Thursday for drama which we also LOVE! Being a smaller class means everyone has a chance to shine and we make sure that we do! Having fun is important to us and we work hard to make sure everyone is included in everything that goes on.

We have a new topic each term and this filters into all other aspects of the curriculum giving meaning to what we learn. A recent topic for example was The Ancient Greeks so in literacy we wrote newspaper reports from about different events in their history. The culmination of our work was a play at the Acorn Theatre of Homer's Odyssey. Our friends and family came and we showed off everything we'd worked on.

In another topic on Space, we wrote non-chronological reports about alien creatures, made them in art out of plasticine and used voice recording and animation software in computing to bring them to life.

It was really fun – it was like making a movie in the cinema.

I like the way we made them out of plasticine because it doesn’t dry out and we could make them into different creatures throughout the days we did our animation.

It was challenging to get the program working how we wanted it to so we had to work hard.

We really enjoy maths in Puffins class and complete ‘Morning Maths’ sheets every day that help build our key skills. We also try different mental maths activities every day. We love a challenge and are working positively to become ‘masters’ in as many ways we can. Many of us will tell you maths is one of our favourite subjects.

 It is just so...so satisfying.

We are also very much engaged by a great variety of reading material…

I love reading – it gives us a chance use our imagination.

I love learning about new words I come across in reading.

A recent class novel was The Boy in the Tower by Polly H -Yen.

It was awesome because every time we stopped we wanted to read more and we were always getting asked questions about what might happen next.

We are currently reading another book by Polly H-Yen called Where Monsters Lie and are already hooked - it's dark...

In literacy we really benefit from having a mixed age class – we have so many different skills and abilities that we can bounce ideas off each other and develop our own skills every day.

We are really loving preparing for Song Fest and look forward to the Play at Christmas each year where we get to perform at the Acorn Theatre in Penzance.

On Thursday afternoons we are VERY LUCKY to have the wonderful John Brolly teach us drama…

 He’s so much fun!

We all enjoy John Brolly because we like doing very dramatic emotions. He gives us new challenges and we can add our own ideas.

…and LOVE it when Josh teaches us Capoeira on Fridays!

It's challenging but lots of fun

In May, year 6 take their SATs. They have their own club in the build up to help revise with hot chocolate and biscuits.

I’m looking forward to getting ready for SATs and having biscuits at the same time!

Each year, children from years 4, 5 and 6 go on a residential trip and have A LOT of fun in the process. The location is different each time so last year we went to Porthpean Outdoor Education Centre in St Austell where we stayed in amazing little pods and took part in a range of activities in from kayaking to climbing and abseiling. In other years we have visited Mountbatten, The Eden Project and Heatree Outdoors on Dartmoor.

Puffins Class is certainly a lot of fun!

We know each other so well and are such good friends!

Come and see for yourself!
